Tuesday Twilight Shortened Course with a Spinnaker Start

With a soft north-westerly blowing, the first official summer Tuesday Twilight race provided unique conditions for the fleet. On Xena, we had our first spinnaker start, raising the symmetric and flying it down the course. Our team executed a beautiful smooth gybe at Robertson Point to meet Lively at Navy Two.

As we headed to Shark Is on the shortened course, the wind shifted to the north. With Lively to leeward, we were too shy for the kite, so we lowered it and joined the fleet on a close reach to Shark Island. Once around, we faced a brisk beat in a very fluky breeze to the finish line.

Xena’s crew is still learning spinnaker handling, and each outing gives us a chance to experiment and fine-tune our coordination with the boat's unique deck layout. The light winds so far this season have been perfect for this kind of practice.

The atmosphere in the CCA was very festive, with a full complement of sailors. Our very knowledgeable race officers took the opportunity to update us on some unique points of our race rules, and then it was on to the prize giving, generously sponsored by Mezzacarona Wines.
