Thursday evening sailing

A new initiative from the Commodore and Sailing Committee

Richard Lawson writes, ‘Marcus Stewart and his crew on Lively join the Rapunzel crew in saying, how much we are enjoying the new Club initiative of sailing on Thursday evenings. We have the harbour to ourselves, other than a small group of catamarans. The sailing has been really enjoyable despite the challenging winds.

There are no 'close shaves' to negotiate, and the only thing lacking is a few more boats to come and enjoy the racetrack. Last week, 19th October, was an exception ...... when the sun came out and the breeze backed off to about 12 knots. We had 6 starters and most stayed on and tested the pizza oven delights. It was a full-on night in the CCA and wonderful to see the facility being used to that extent mid-week.

Last night’s race, Thursday 26th October, was once again a challenge ...... even from the terrace!! A fair amount of breeze and rain showers were coming and going. However, Marcus and his Lively crew were willing, so both crews jumped on the tender and set off to do battle for the fourth time in this series.

Unfortunately for Lively, they had a damaged #3 so set a modified jib from their previous boat which was a tad too small, although both boats started with a reef, in about 18 knots from the SSE.

Rapunzel was fortunate to have as crew, Maree McLauchlin, from One More No More, along with Richard and Rene Chapman. Richard and I had sailed together for many years on Etchells, so it was really nice to come together again after a long break. Sandy made the comment, “You two obviously enjoy sailing together with very little communication.” My only response was, "That is the most enjoyable way to sail".

Needless to say, we had a great sail in a freshening breeze, at about 20 plus knots going back up into Rose Bay, and a quick downhill slide to the finish at Kirribilli. A big thanks from the Rapunzel and Lively crews to Jim Hawkins and Judy Waring, our Race Officers. They have braved the conditions on all four nights of the Thursday Series which has allowed us to go out and have some genuine fun!!'
