RSYS Optichicks at Woollahra Sailing Club

It has been a very busy weekend for our RSYS Opti Sailors. Beginning on Friday afternoon, a group of our dedicated youth sailors made their way over to Woollahara Sailing Club, ready for a weekend of activities at the Anuual Optichicks Event.

Green Fleet Opti Sailor, Cleo McLay writes “On Friday after school Viv, Issy and I sailed and towed our boats over to Woollahra sailing club ready for Opti Chicks on Saturday morning. First thing in the morning, we got our boats rigged and ready and we each tie-dyed a T-shirt. We had a quick briefing and headed out onto the water. We did a triangle course and raced a few times.

After a lunch break, we went outside and got a quick tutorial on winging. Winging was really exciting but way harder than it looks. After everyone had a go at winging, we switched ribs and took turns on an FX 49er!

It was the best fun! I went on the trapeze for the first time and it was scary but fun. Later that afternoon, we went back into the briefing room.

Up there on stage were some star female sailors who answered all of our questions. Hannako Tomashima (Aus Optimist Worlds), Lucinda Whitty (Olympian) and Evie Hazeldine (preparing for Paris 2024). Lucinda had a silver olympic medal!

I think Optichicks was great because I was with a group of girls around my age who feel the same way about sailing that I do - we all love it!”
