Rob Lowndes a legend at ILCA Masters World Championship

Squadron member Rob Lowndes reports on the 2024 ILCA Masters World Championships held at Adelaide Sailing Club from 4th to 10th February. Rob had won two previous Masters Worlds in the Radial Great Grand Master (65 to 74) age group in 2015 and 2016.

Rob writes, 'I think we all agreed it was one of best ever Masters. Great venue, clear water and developing SW sea breeze every day. This was the third major ILCA regatta in five weeks at ASC and their organisation. The positive, friendly vibe from all officials and volunteers was outstanding.

The regatta attracted many great Australian Laser sailors from the past including Colin Beashel, Brendan Casey, Tim Alexander and of course the ever present (and winner!) Brett Beyer.

As always, the fleet was divided into two fleets (ILCA 6 and 7) and then further divided into 10 year age groups. I was sailing in the ILCA 6 “Legends” group for sailors 75 and above.

Our fleet was dominated by my good friend and long time rival Bill Symes (Portland, Oregon USA) who won 9 of the 12 races. I was generally happy with my sailing notching up six seconds and a third but let myself down with some mistakes in the other races.

Tim Alexander and I were equal points before the last day’s two races but Tim deservedly came 2nd to my 3rd overall.
