Perseverance Pays Off for Arcturus 3 in Challenging Trophy Race

Julie Clarke, skipper of Arcturus writes, 'Rain and a light westerly wind gave Division 2 competitors a challenge for Saturday's Trophy Race. The start was south of Shark Mark. A shortened Course 6 was chosen by the race officer, which provided two and a half circuits ending at the Squadron.

As always with a westerly, there were many wind holes, favoured sides of the course, and plenty of luck involved in finishing the race, especially when the wind completely died on the last leg.

Arcturus 3 had a good start but chose the wrong side of the course on the first beat allowing Irukandji to round KP first. We maintained second place on the run to SM, then again choosing the wrong side of the course on the beat we allowed One More No More to creep ahead.

The last beat to the finish became a lottery, as the wind dropped to just 2-3 knots from the west before completely dying. Three boats retired, leaving Irukandji, Arcturus 3, and Hector drifting for some considerable time. However, perseverance was rewarded when we felt a light zephyr from the north, just enough pressure for a broad reach to the finish line. We crossed the line three minutes after Irukandji, just close enough to take the win on handicap.

All credit to Hector, who persisted and crossed the line just before 1700 hours.

The crew of Arcturus 3 is delighted to win the Intercolonial Trophy race.'
