High Winds for First Sunday Twilight Race

'

Mark Salmon, skipper of Sakura writes, 'Wow, what an afternoon. We were half expecting the committee to call off the race due to the high winds, so it wasn't a complete surprise that only four boats showed up for the start.

We're a small family crew on Sundays. Me (Grandpa) on the helm, Louise (Grandma) serving as lookout, photographer and morale booster, Ollie (Grandson, 9) doing radio duty as well as fetching and carrying, Eddie (Grandson, 15) doing his second season on mainsheet, Angelica on jib, and Alex is the sailing master, chief tactician, foredeck and ‘anythingelsethatneedsdoing’. Everyone did their job with safety and with great skill in the windy conditions - very proud of them all.

To the race: We had an almost flawless run under our No.3 and with a single reef in the main. Sakura handled and pointed beautifully in the 20-25 knot breeze and we weren't seriously challenged until the homeward stretch when Phoebe tried to catch us - unsuccessfully on this occasion ;-)

A good start to the season and thanks to the three other boats that made it a race!'
