Cleaning Up for a Sustainable Cause

The RSYS Clubhouse crew were among more than a million people nationally to don their gloves for Clean Up Australia on Sunday.

Organised by Molly Dixon, staff including Blythe Ogilvie, Abby Gilbert and Tom Hartnell, took to the harbour foreshore at Kirribilli to create impact and awareness around the importance of sustainability.

The brainchild of round-the-world-yachtsman and Australian of the Year, the late Ian Kiernan, Clean Up Australia is in its 34th year.

The RSYS crew led a group of more than 60 internationals and locals collecting 15 big bags of rubbish which included plastic wrappers, bottles, cans, fishing lines, cigarette butts and chewing gum. The largest item was a rug hidden in the trees around Bradfield Park under the harbour bridge.

“We had a heap of fun doing something good for our community,” said Molly, granddaughter of 1972 Olympian and two-time America’s Cup yachtsman Rob Thornton.

“Sydney and the harbour are so beautiful; it is important we keep them clean. By being involved in Clean Up Australia we are making a commitment to do that and to think about how we reduce waste in our daily lives.”

Many thanks to Ned, Lucy and the team who assisted with the launch of a rowing boat that cleaned up the water around Jeffrey Street Wharf.
