Chainsaw Wins Duke of Gloucester Cup

Last Saturday's Spring Series was a trophy race for Divisions 1-3.

John Amos writes, ‘As we motored to Athol Bay on Saturday my main concern was whether newly installed rudder bearings would improve Chainsaw’s steering.

The race officer had set Course 4 for a SSEaster that was blowing at 10-15 kts and we were surprised to find that there were only 5 other starters in Division 1.

We started late and second last at the less-favoured boat end of the line but on the work to Double Bay we overtook Corum. We then hoisted the masthead spinnaker for the long shy reach to Manly. We gained on Hell Razer and Cuckoo’s Nest and on the work back we passed Razer and caught Cuckoo at EC.

We rolled over the top of Cuckoo on the second shy reach to Manly and covered her on the work back to Woollahra Point, finishing 1 minute 25 seconds ahead.

My crew were elated as we had not won a Main Series trophy for the last 12 seasons of racing with the Squadron!

Also, the steering was slightly better!
