A perfect breeze for Sydney Harbour Women's Keelboat Series

Last Sunday was the first of a series of five races hosted consecutively by each of the five Combined Clubs of which RSYS is one.

Of the seven boats entered in Division 2, RSYS was represented by four boats; Xena (Amanda Hicks), Lively (Sophie Nelson), Jabiru (Natasha Miller) and Anemology (Kim Ketelbey).

After motoring up to the Start off Sow & Pigs Reef, on a drizzly morning with literally no wind, the predicted northerly breeze came in with perfect timing for the 12.55 start.

Jabiru got off with a cracking start towards a top mark at Cannae Point. From there, with kites set, the course headed south around Shark Island. With the tide now flooding and the breeze shifting east, the fleet started to separate, with some boats lured into the often fickle depths of Watsons Bay and the wind shadows of Steele Point. After the Chowder Bay North mark, it was time to choose a side of the harbour for the work back up to Cannae Point. Rounding Cannae for the last run, across The Sound with large rollers coming through the Heads, the boats headed for an Eastern Channel Mark rounding before working up to the Finish.

Congratulations to Melody (MYC) on their win. Anemology (RSYS) was placed second and Alcamy (BSC) third. Thank you, Middle Harbour Yacht Club. The Course was a great test of everyone’s crew work and tactics given the variable wind and sea state. I know the Anemology crew were tested at times with our asymmetric, especially in the rolling waves!

It is a great Series so it would be wonderful to see a RSYS boat in Division 1, especially when RSYS hosts the racing on 24 November.
