A Chat with Team Australia Squad Sailors
Australia has been confirmed by the organisers of the 37th America’s Cup as one of the 12 national Youth and Women’s America’s Cup teams in Barcelona 2024 scoring entry for a youth team (under 25) alongside the history making first women’s competition. Three RSYS members are part of the 13 person squad announced in April. Annie Wilmot, Jack Ferguson and Max Paul will be joining us on Friday July 5 to share their experience to date and what lies ahead.
Annie Wilmot
Annie, now 25, grew up sailing on Sydney Harbour, spending most of her life on the water. She was first thrown in a Manly Junior at 4 years old out of the
Manly16's
and has loved the sport ever since.
“I come from a big sailing family and the America’s Cup is very much a part of our history. Hugh Treharne, my uncle, was tactician on the iconic winning boat Australia II. Together with my dad, Bob Wilmot, they raced on Australia IV for the 1987
America's Cup
defence. I feel honoured to follow in the footsteps of those before me, especially at the top level of this sport. It’s a special feeling”.
Sailing for the
Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
, Annie is also a member of the
Australian Sailing Team
in the Women’s Skiff (49erFX) with skipper Laura Harding. They placed 5th at the World Championship 2024 in Lanzarote, 6th in the Europeans 2024, 5th at French Olympic Week, and 8th in Palma and are now focussed on a campaign towards LA2028.
At just 25, Annie has a proven track record demonstrating exceptional skill and experience across multiple sailing classes, consistently achieving notable success and championships in various categories and partnerships.
“To have the opportunity as a female sailor to race in an event that’s deemed ‘the pinnacle of sailing’ is surreal. I’m proud to be a part of a strong group of Australian women who are ready and eager to show the world that Australia not only has the best sailors in the world, but our female sailors are a massive contribution to this success”.
Jack Ferguson
Jack Ferguson is the youngest member of Team Australia Challenge squad yet has competed at the highest level in various forms of sailing. He is the current 49er Junior World Champion and recently placed 6th at the Trofeo Princess Sofia Regatta. He currently also campaigns in the Moth class, and placed 8th at the 2023 Moth Pre-Worlds. Although the Moth World Championships was not completed due to lack of wind, he placed on the podium in the first of two races. Jack has also raced as a member of the Enzedder 69F team, a popular 7 metre foiling monohull in Europe used as a training platform for many Women/Youth America’s Cup Teams. Previously, Jack has claimed 5 National Championships across various classes. First in the Optimist in 2017, followed by the International 420 with two different teammates in 2019/2020 and the Foiling Waszp in 2020/2021. In 2021 he was named Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Yachtsman of the Year, & held a NSW Institute of Sport Individual Performance scholarship.
Max Paul
Max is a current member of the Australian Sailing Team. In 2023 Max placed 2nd at the Trofeo Princess Sofia World Cup in the 49er and placed 6th in 2024 in that event. Max has also competed successfully in the Australian match racing circuit, placing 2nd twice at the Hardy Cup in 2022 and 2023 and 2nd at the 2022 Harken Youth International. Max is a two time 29er Australian National Champion in 2018 and 2019, the same years he came 2nd in the 29er World Championships (2018) and 3rd in the World Sailing Youth World Championships (2019). In 2023 and 2024 he was named Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Youth Sailor of the Year.
