Learn to Sail for Children & Teens

Kids Learn to Sail Course - 8 to 12yrs

In 2013 RSYS adopted the new Australian Sailing endorsed Learn to Sail program for children, called the 'Tackers Program'. The Tackers Program is aimed at introducing children aged 8 to 12 to sailing in a fun, safe, accessible and affordable way. The program offers children the opportunity to start on a pathway to ongoing involvement in clubs, gradually progressing through over several seasons.

The Tackers Program utilises a poly-plastic and simplified version of the International Optimist sailing dinghy. The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy sailed by children up to the age of 15. It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the Class and many more built but never registered. It is sailed in over 120 countries and in the last Olympics 85% of medal winning skippers were former Optimist dinghy sailors.

The RSYS Tackers Program is open to both members and non-members. Tackers sailors are provided with a boat for all training, receive instruction from accredited Australian Sailing Instructors as well as receiving a Certificate with each level passed. Participants in an RSYS Tackers program need to own their own Personal Flotation Device (PFD). For assistance in choosing a PFD, please feel free to contact the Sailing Office.

Teenager Discover Sailing Courses - 13 to 17yrs

The RSYS Teenage Discover Sailing Courses are designed for teenagers aged between 13-17 years of age, using the Australian Sailing 'Keelboat Program'. All training courses are conducted by accredited Australian Sailing Instructors and are also open to both members and non-members.

Courses make use of our new and exciting fleet of Elliott 7m sport boats. Our boats allow you to learn to sail without the fear of capsizing, and usually with several other people onboard. Learning to sail in a self-righting keelboat provides a learning platform that is stable yet responsive.

Throughout the course, our teenage students will be able to enjoy sailing in all parts of Sydney Harbour, including an adventure sail and lunch to Cockatoo Island and should conditions permit, a trip to the Middle Harbour area. Students will be able to learn the fundamentals of sailing and develop an understanding of each person’s role and how teamwork plays a major part of being an effective crew. They will come away with the knowledge and confidence to sail a small boat competently and for those that wish, you can progress to larger boats or participate as crew on a racing boat.

What's it all About?

Tackers is a great sailing program for children aged 8 to 12; it's fun, safe, and best of all, affordable! Australian Sailing provides more information about the 'Tackers Program' here. There are three levels that sailors progress through.

Tackers 1 - Having Fun

Tackers children sail in pairs in small boats. It's a great way to meet new friends and children have the chance to sail with others in their group.

Tackers 2 - Tricks & Techniques

If Tackers are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support and encouragement from the Instructors.

Tackers 3 - Sailing Fast!

This is a chance for the children to sail boats on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and sail more efficiently.

What's Next...

Once having completed the Tackers program Sailors move into Green Fleet, having purchased their own fibreglass Optimist, and start learning the skills of racing and enjoying all the other elements the sport can offer.
