Congratulations to our Senior Development Program (SDP) youth members who have won the final event of the Interclub Championship Series 2018.
The Interclub Series is between the three major yacht clubs in Sydney (RSYS, CYCA and RPAYC), as well as the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club. The series is an opportunity for each of the clubs youth teams to compete in keelboat fleet racing and practise their skills.
The final event was hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on Pittwater last Sunday 24 June. With a light westerly breeze in the morning both our teams led the fleet for the first few races and as the breeze shifted south their clean crew work secured them the win.
Team A, led by Jack Littlechild, were Boat of the Day placing first in all but two races. A mixed crew of new SDP members and one senior, the team sailed fast and kept the tactics simple. Evie Haseldine (Main Trimmer) commented on the day, "I had lots of fun, the racing was really close especially when the southerly came through".
Team B, led by Charlotte Alexander, also had a successful day placing third overall. Another mixed crew, Charlotte was one of the favourites coming into the day after her win at the Newcastle event. Leading the fleet in the first two races the team started the day strong, however as the southerly built they struggled to separate themselves from the fleet. Charlotte commented on the day, "it was a good day of racing and I learnt a lot. My crew did a great job and kept us in the top 3 for most of the races."
The SDP squad's next event is the Shelving Systems Match Cup at the CYCA on Saturday 30 June.
