Squadron Keelboat Program launches into training

This week the Squadron Keelboat Program began for the 2020/2021 season with 22 Youth sailors hitting the water at sunrise on Monday morning.

The program is designed for sailors aged 13 - 23 years who are interested in keelboat racing, including match racing, at a state, national and international level. The group of sailors for this season is the largest in the program's recent history and is composed of three Youth America's Cup sailors, two world champions and several national champions.

The sailors have been split into two squads: a junior and senior squad, and will train weekly under Nev Wittey for the next eight months. Throughout the season sailors will have the opportunity to compete at several regattas including the Squadron's 2020 Christmas Cup, 2021 Hardy Cup and the Squadron's Mini B series. In addition to these regattas, the sailors will be assisting the club's race management team and Sailing Office to help up-skill our Youth sailors.

After the training session on Monday Nev commented, "It was great to see all four of the Squadron's Elliott 7s out on the water this morning despite the weather. Our program has been working hard over the last two years to get a solid base of sailors and it is great to have some new faces join the program."

The first event an SKP team will be attending is the RSYS IceBreaker Series (8-9 August 2020). You can follow their progress at the event on the Squadrons Instagram (@rsys1862).
