Graeme Smith writes, 'While Sydney Harbour is one of the great joys for sailing it is the crew that create great fun afloat. We are fortunate to have an eclectic group on Gail Force; tradies, medical professionals, financiers, technology gurus and few, such as myself, who are passed the time of useful employment. The fun and discussion are frequently the highlight of the race.

After the wild weather of the previous week and the forecast for last Saturday, there was some discussion at the CCA bar, whether we should stay put and settle in for lunch or brave the elements. During a brief break in the rain and a glimpse of blue sky we decided the race was on.

The SSE course is our favourite. It offers the best of the Harbour and long reaches up to Georges Head and Obelisk. We were lucky in our timing for the start at Athol Bay gaining a front position and a clear lead over to N2. As we goosewinged up to Georges Head the rain held off, but we experienced continued wind shifts. These shifts, in fact, favoured us as they allowed us to avoid a jibe and perfectly lay the mark. The rain and wind were quite severe on the reach over to Shark Island and visibility somewhat limited. However, having rounded the Island we settled into a long reach up to Obelisk with time to enjoy sandwiches and a relaxed sail.

On the reach over to Lady Bay and up the Harbour, wind shifts forced us into a few unwanted tacks. The rain also returned creating quite challenging conditions. Once into Rose Bay we had clear wind and a line of site to the N2 finish line, a great reach with a 20-knot breeze and a much valued win. Another great day afloat.'
