Shout Out to the Squaddie Lasers!

Natasha Miller writes, ‘Has there ever been a dinghy quite like the Laser (now ILCA)? With over 223,000 boats sailed worldwide, from beginners to Olympians, and ranging from U16 sailors to legends (75+), the Laser has proven to be a versatile and enduring choice. Not to mention the countless boats enjoying their twilight years at holiday homes across the nation.

The State Championships at Georges River Sailing Club, held on 16-17 November 2024, saw 78 sailors competing across three classes.

In the ILCA 7 fleet, Campbell Patton (DBSC/RSYS/RBYC) led by just one point over Daniel Costandi (GRSC/DBSC), with Julian Taylor (DBSC/WSC) finishing in third and securing the first U21 spot. We're especially proud of Julian, our Head Coach in the dinghy program, for his outstanding performance.

The ILCA 4 fleet was full of impressive sailing, particularly with the challenging wind-against-tide conditions. Jago Tucker (WSC) dominated, scoring 5 wins. Zac Howell (HHSC) placed second, while Raphael McLachlan (DBSC/RSYS) came in third, and Isabella Taylor (WSC/RSYS) claimed fourth and first woman.

The ILCA 6 fleet also showcased fantastic sailing and fierce competition.

RSYS Laser/ILCA – Expression of Interest

A large proportion of Members are between the ages of 25 and 70 and are capable of sailing Lasers/ILCA. Perhaps it’s worthwhile trying to squeeze into a wetsuit and getting the integrated sail/workout experience?

With three different rig sizes available in the class, anyone can sail these boats. Once familiar, it only takes 15 minutes to rig the boat, and no crew is needed.

The first session will be on 5 December at 1715 hrs. If you have interest in joining the RSYS Laser Sailing Group, whether you currently own a Laser or not, please email RSYS Member, Peter Dobrijevic, at [email protected]. There will be a meeting on Thursday 28 November to discuss this opportunity further.
