Second in John Messenger Women's Regatta

Jade Gavin writes, 'The John Messenger regatta, hosted by the CYCA, incorporates the Australian Women’s Match Racing Championship. From Friday to Sunday, 8 teams including 2 teams from New Zealand raced 2 round robins before moving to knockouts/semi finals.

My team did very well the first two days; medium and shifty winds on Friday, and strong breeze on Saturday. After the round robins, we placed 2nd putting us into the semi-finals against RNZYS skipper Ella Arnold.

Sunday delivered champagne sea breeze and we won the semi finals 2-0. Moving to the finals, the racing against RPAYC’s Juliet Constanzo was very exciting. We won the first two matches, but Costanzo took back the momentum for the next three matches. It was an honour to match race Costanzo, a very competitive skipper I look up to. I wish her the best of luck in the Women’s World Match Racing Trophy in Bermuda.

Coming away with 2nd place brings me much joy as a first-time skipper. I would like to thank the CYCA, the race committee, the umpires, and the competitors for such a great event. Thank you to Nev Wittey and Zac West for coaching us. I would also like to thank the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for their support leading up to and through the event. Lastly, thank you to my team for their amazing effort, Emily Keg (main trimmer), India Gilbert (tactician), Gretel Payne (trimmer) and Katina Casimaty (bow).
