Clear Air for Allegro in Friday Twilight Race

John Taylor writes, ‘The South East breeze was oscillating between 14 and 18 knots so we went with our middle No.2 headsail. Allegro and Alibi were the Division 1 bunnies that the rest of the division were chasing.

We both started on starboard tack heading for Cremorne Point. Alibi started at the northern end of the line and had to tack near the ferry wharf, but we started next to Gitana and got a nice lift off the point that allowed us to squeeze past without tacking. Fortunately, there was no Mosman ferry coming around the corner.

We tacked in Athol Bight for N3 and after rounding it we were able to close reach up to Lady Bay. Despite efforts to keep the crew focussed on trimming they noted Lady Bay was quite busy with swimmers.

We fully expected to be caught on the next leg to Shark Island. To our surprise, we were still about 200 metres ahead of Can Can when she reached the mark. By this stage our headsail was poled out and the trimmers were having a rest.

Off Bradleys Head the crew reported, with some incredulity, that no-one was gaining on us and we crossed the line with the horn.

Being in clear breeze for the whole race was a big advantage but also, we probably enjoyed more than our fair share of puffs under the dark rain clouds.

Our thanks as always to the race volunteers.'
