Champagne Sailing: A Tuesday to Remember

Jocelyn Webb writes, ‘The crew of Elliott 3 were excited to finally sail a full course again! The forecast, a 20-knot Nor’easter (a sure sign that summer is on its way!) promised a ‘pretty sporty’ workout—perfect for burning off the upcoming silly season excesses and an excellent opportunity to improve skills in a strong breeze.

Expertly skippered by Sally Badger, she nailed the start, thanks to Tamara’s diligent time calls. Super Coach Marike provided invaluable guidance, while Diana (from Elliott 2, which wasn’t sailing) joined as a much-appreciated addition to the crew, bringing her experience with Elliotts.

Rising star Emma Badger, fresh from her year-end exams, shared sail trim duties with Diana, contributing to the team’s seamless performance.

Sally was thrilled to finish the race, despite finding the conditions challenging for steering. But as she put it, “all practice is good practice and confidence-building!”

Tamara, meanwhile, reflected on how much she appreciated Coach Marike’s calm demeanour and constant reassurance throughout the challenging conditions, which helped continue building her confidence. It's hard to believe that Tamara, who only learned to sail last year, is already making such remarkable progress! She is also proving to be an expert at sneaking amazing photos between manoeuvres. For that, we’re especially grateful, as it helps us capture another evening of unforgettable “champagne sailing.”

The last word goes to trimmer Emma, who shared her own take on the race, “Mum tried to kill me!” (Of course, by “mum” she means skipper Sally—typical teenage humour!).

After the race, the crew excitedly swapped stories with other sailors, enjoying a well-earned champagne (or, in Emma's case, a Shirley Temple) to celebrate another terrific—if sometimes terrifying—Tuesday on our beautiful harbour playground."
