A Classic Australia Day Regatta: A Perfect Day on the Harbour

Nigel Stoke writes, ‘This was a classic Australia Day for the 189th Australia Day Regatta, the longest continuously run yacht race, 'through peace and war... and COVID.'

The morning’s backdrop, with navy ships, ferry races, aerial flyovers, a helicopter carrying flags, and a parade of tall ships, made for a spectacular day.

It seemed there were more boats on the harbour this year, all out to enjoy the event.

The weather was much improved after the cancellation of the twilight races over the previous days. Winds were 12 to 15 knots, variable from ENE to ESE, providing a mostly reaching course for most yachts.

This year saw 56 entries across the Classics, Mixed Divisions 1, 2, and 3, and the Historic Skiffs.

The conditions were perfect for Fidelis, which powered around the course in under an hour, taking line honours and a narrow win on handicap in the Classic Division.

Thanks to the Australia Day Committee and RSYS for hosting the event.’
