History Lunch 'Beecroft's Caricatures'
Characters from our Club’s past, as told by John Maclurcan
John Maclurcan (writer, historian, collector and inter alia, the Club’s handicapper) will select four paintings by the artist L. Herbert Beecroft, currently on display in the Northern Entrance. In this talk he will speak about our second Commodore – Henry Carey Dangar and the following Beecroft Caricatures:
Fred Doran – Manager of the Port Jackson and Manly Company who ran ferries and was a formidable rival on the race course.
Russell Marshall – a Real Estate Engineer and Auctioneer with a fine motor cruiser
Wallace McPherson Cameron – a local merchant and one time owner of “Iduna”
Walter Reeks – the famous Naval Architect who designed so many famous RSYS yachts towards the end of the 19th Century.
David Payne, a member of the History Committee and a Director of the Maritime Museum, will share the microphone at this event and speak about Walter Reeks.
The Paintings will be displayed on a large screen and John will:
● Analyse the features of the painting, unlocking the stories attached
● Tell you about the painter Beecroft
● Tell you about the subject of the painting.
Behind each painting is a wealth of stories of the characters who made up the history of Sydney and the RSYS from 1870 to 1930.
